Holley Petrick shared with the club the activities of the 4-H Mentor Program.  This important program serves serveral schools in the Jefferson County area.  Holley also challenged the club members with a fun hands on activity.

Dominic Testa with the Big Brain Club provided the club members an interesting insight into todayís school environment.  The Big Brain Club actively seeks to make being smart cool through numerous activities and support.

Sarah Dempster from the CELL Exhibit in Denver provided an interesting overview of the exhibit.  The Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (CELL) is dedicated to the prevention of terrorism through education, empowerment and engagement.  Sarah also shared how individuals can play a role in the prevention of terrorism.

Roger Pool from our own Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club provided an overview of the scope and breadth of the programs that our club supports.  The breadth of support starts within the community and expands to international needs.   The presentation was escpecially information for newer members.

Our clubs own Harold Prat described his 41 day journey riding a bicycle from the Canadian border to the Mexican border along the pacific coast highway.  The club enjoyed the wonderful scenic photos and was throughly impressed by Harold and his wife’s ability to complete the trip.

Dr. Dirk Dolbeare was supported by Erin Ludke to provide a fascinating walk through and description of medical procedures that are common when joint health requires the replacement of a knee or hip.  There were many questions prompted by the presentation and the working models on display were very interesting.

Our clubs own Marshal Turner described his trip to Pine Ridge Reservation.  Marshalís knowledge and preparation for the presentation was well received by the club members.

Melissa Hellmuth provided a very interesting overview of the services that CASA Jeffco/Gilpin provides to the community.  CASA Jeffco/Gilpin provides significant services to ensure that abused and neglected children have a competent and caring volunteer advocate to represent them in court proceedings.

Jim Vaughan shared his views on effective leadership.  Jimís views on leadership were developed over numerous years of service with the Marine Corps and U.S. Border Patrol.  Jim believes that three key characteristics are courage, character and caring about others.

Natalie VanTyne from our own Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club shared her experiences from attending several Rotary International Conferences.  Most recently Natalie attended the Rotary International Conference in Sydney Australia.  The annual convention brings together Rotary members from across the world.  It allows for an exchange of ideas and provides an avenue for identifying new service projects.

Jamie Sheridan from the Golden Rotary Club educated the club members about the Rotary Youth Study Exchange.  Rotary Youth Study Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.  It was an insightful discussion about sponsoring a student.

Marina Klassen spoke to the members of the LFR Club about her experiences from her participation in the 2014 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA).  RYLA is a leadership training program where leadership skills and principles are learned, developed, and enhanced in an atmosphere of trust and respect.  Marina did an excellent job of sharing her personal experiences.  She echoed what many past RYLA participants have said, "It was the best week of my life!".  The LFR Club provides scholarships to support attendance a participant’s attendance at RYLA.

2014, August 26

Lorian Bartle entertained and educated the club by describing various instrumental and vocal pieces which she then performed for us.  Lorian is a guitarist and vocalist who both performs and teaches.  Lorian is committed to performing in diverse community venues.  It was an excellent way to spend the lunch hour.

Carol Baumbush, who is a member of the Denver Southeast Rotary Club, spoke to the members of the LFR Club about the Peaceful Schools Partnership.  The Peaceful Schools Partnership is an exciting new program that utilizes a form of the Rotarian four way test to educate elementary school children.

Jerry Wilkins educated the members of LFR Club about the Good Egg Project.  Americaís egg farmers launched the Good Egg Project to educate the public about the different types of eggs, production systems and the process from farm to table.

Steve Tonkin spoke to the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club abou the 3 ’C’s of Ethical Decision Making.  The foundation of ethical decision making stems from understanding your own intrinsic motivations.  If you understand your self-identity, purpose and what satisifes you, you will have a greater chance of making an ethical decision.

Anita Jepson-Gilbert spoke to the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club about the Lines of Nazca in Peru.  This was a facinating and informative presentation about the current understanding about the lines.  The relationship of the lines to clean water was especially interesting.

Amy Friedman spoke to the Lakewood Foothills Rotary Club about the Denver based organization Book Trust.  The Book Trust programs puts books directly into the hands of children from low-income families during their most pivotal learning years.
